WATCH Pose (seasons 1-3)

Quotes from the gorgeous and fabulous (though mostly fictional character base) series “Pose” (three seasons already!) that helps us in the 2020s understand what happened with the queer community and underground balls in New York in the 1980s. A somewhat (and beautifully created and reenacted) historical narrative.

“Remember, Doll, there’s not many yous out there…” [as Nurse Judy encourages Blanca Evangelista on their inclination to become a nurse, despite their school history of dyslexia. Their partner (also in medical profession) says they will support their decision and coach them] [Blanca Evangelista]: “When you get rejected by your mother, your father, you’re always out there looking for someone to replace the love you’re missing.”

“…Listen, nobody is out here teaching parents how to accept their gay children. You can’t blame yourself for what you didn’t know.” [Elektra, House of Abundance, encourages bio-mother in hospital who is crying at the side of their gay-child on their deathbed after having abandoned them during their past years]

“Remind a bitch of her worth” Elektra expresses as Angel and Blanca close in for a close-relational house embrace after Blanca shares their experience having met their partner’s parents for the first time, but not having been defended by them during the conversation when parents (particularly the mother) came to be turned off and ended the formal meal at the prestigious restaurant. This after mother expresses interest in couple’s ability to have children, but understanding Blanca’s “form of expression” having already had “4” children in their “house” who were, as mother terms “friends”. Few would ever understand the real impact and meaning of the “House of Evangelista” and its impact on the lives of those involved.
